Terry Charters, CDT, is quite the seasoned laboratory veteran, having been in the industry since 1977. Small laboratories often have the perception that going digital isn’t necessary for one reason or another. But for Charters Dental Arts Lab, Inc., a small 3-person laboratory in Massachusetts, moving to digital dentistry was a no-brainer.
Says Charters, „I think digital dentistry is here to stay, for sure. And I really can’t see a laboratory actually surviving much more than 3, 5 years possibly [without making the shift to digital].
Even for laboratories that think they’re involved with digital dentistry because they farm out work to laboratories that are milling centers....as soon as intra-oral scanning becomes more wide-spread, which is only a matter of time, then their lack of ability to accept digital scans basically puts them out of business. It would be like a laboratory not being able to pour an impression. It’s almost that fundamental.“
Moving his 3-person laboratory to a digitally integrated workflow resulted in time and cost savings. As a laboratory focusing on implant prosthetics, the integration of coDiagnostiX™ with CADCAM has made a world of difference. Straumann’s CADCAM software now accepts digital scanning files from iTero™ directly into the Straumann validated workflow, giving Charters Dental Arts Lab, Inc. the ability to work within a full prosthetic digital workflow for customized abutment cases. The time-savings and efficiencies are enormous.

The laboratory market is saturated with CADCAM systems to choose from. Laboratories often invest in multiple systems to meet the restorative needs of their referring clinicians, and the cost associated with the initial purchase and software updates can be challenging to maintain.
Straumann® CARES® Digital Solutions offers the applications and materials laboratory technicians need – within a single system via Straumann CARES System 7.0. With a leading materials portfolio that includes 3M™ ESPE™ Lava™ Ultimate Restorative, IPS e.max® CAD, and Straumann’s own zerion® ceramic, ticon® titanium and more, Chris May, CDT can work with Straumann for whatever material he needs.
More than just materials, Straumann CARES is the right business choice for May. He says, „we’re partnerning up with Straumann because we have the tools, we have the training, the resources, to continue on in the future.“
